4 Technical requirements for lateral protection device
4.1 Lateral protection device shall be measured in accordance with the test conditions specified in A.1 of Annex A. The outer surface of the lateral protection device shall be smooth and as continuous as possible; adjacent components may overlap, but the exposed edge of the overlap joint shall be rearward or downward; a longitudinal gap no greater than 25 mm shall be left between adjacent components, but the rear part shall not exceed the outside of the front part. The round head of the bolt and rivet may protrude from the outer surface by no more than 10 mm, and it is the same for other parts as long as they are smooth and have a similar round head structure. Exposed edges and corners in contact with a sphere 100 mm in diameter shall be chamfered with a fillet radius of no less than 2 5 mm; for components projecting by less than 5 mm, the edges of the outward surface shall be blunted.
4.2 The lateral protection device can be a continuous plane or consist of one or more rods, or an assembly of the plane and rods; if rod structure is adopted, the rod spacing shall be no greater than 300 mm, and the cross section height shall be:
a) no less than 50 mm for N2 and O3 vehicles;
b) no less than 100 mm for N3 and O4 vehicles.
The plane-and-rod composite structure shall form a physically continuous lateral protection device, which shall meet the requirements of 4.1.
4.3 The front edge of the lateral protection device shall have a continuous vertical member going through the whole height. For N2 and O3 vehicles, the outer side and front face of the vertical member shall be recurved and incurved by at least 50 mm and 100mm respectively, or be made into at least one-fourth circular arc with a radius no less than 50mm; for N3 and O4 vehicles, the outer side and front face of the vertical member shall be recurved and incurved by at least 100 mm respectively, or be made into at least one-fourth circular arc with a radius no less than 100mm (as shown in Figure 1).
Dimensions in millimeters
Figure 1 Schematic diagram for vertical member
4.4 The lateral protection device shall be rigid, fixed firmly so that the device will not be loosened due to vibration. It shall be made of metal or other proper materials except for the parts and components mentioned in 4.5. Where 1 kN of static pressure is applied vertically to parts on the outer surface of the device via the flat circular indenter in a diameter of 220mm±10mm, the deformation of the parts due to load carrying shall meet the following requirements:
a) the deformation amount shall be no more than 30 mm for the section 250 mm from the rear edge of the lateral protection device;
b) the deformation amount shall be no more than 150 mm for the rest part.
4.5 Facilities permanently fixedly installed on the vehicle, such as spare tire, battery holder, air cylinder, fuel tank, lamp, reflector, tool box and the like may be used as part of the lateral protection device, in which case, their dimensions shall comply with the requirements of clause 4. The clearance between the lateral protection device and the permanently fixedly installed facilities shall comply with the requirements of 4.1.
4.6 Different installation positions on the vehicle side are allowed to be designed for the lateral protection device. In such case, there shall be a reliable means to ensure that it is in the normal working position after installation, and will not be moved freely; the force to be applied to adjust its installation position shall not exceed 400 N.
5 Technical requirements for vehicles equipped with lateral protection device
5.1 Test vehicles shall be measured according to the test conditions specified in A. 2. The lateral protection device shall not add to the total width of the vehicle, and the major part of its outer surface shall be located no more than 150 mm inside the outermost edge (maximum width) of the vehicle. At least 250 mm of the rear end section of the lateral protection device shall not be located greater than 30 mm inward from the outermost edge of the rear tire (excluding the expanded part of the tire for contact with the ground). For some vehicles, it is allowed to incurvate the front edge of the lateral protection device according to the requirements in 5.2.3 and 5.2.4.
5.2 Structural requirements for front edge of lateral protection devices
5.2.1 The front edge position shall meet the following requirements:
a) For N2 and N3 vehicles: the front edge shall be within 300 mm behind the closer tangent plane of the tire circumference, which is the vertical plane perpendicular to the longitudinal section of the vehicle.
b) For the drawbar trailers: the front edge shall be within 500 mm behind the plane mentioned in 5.2.1a).
c) For semi-trailers: if a supporting device is installed, the front edge shall be located no more than 250 mm behind the central cross-section of the supporting device. However, in no case shall the front edge be over 2,700 mm from the central cross-section of the main towing pin at the most rear position.
d) For the center axle trailers: the front edge shall be located in front of the cross-section of the first axle center, but not beyond the front end of the vehicle body to ensure the normal mobility of the trailer.
5.2.2 Where the front edge of lateral protection device is in an open space which is grater than 25mm, it shall be provided with a continuous vertical member going through the whole height. For N2 and O3 vehicles, the outer side and front face of the vertical member shall be recurved and incurved by at least 50 mm and 100mm respectively, or be made into at least one-fourth circular arc with a radius no less than 50mm; for N3 and O4 vehicles, the outer side and front face of the vertical member shall be recurved and incurved by at least 100 mm respectively, or be made into at least one-fourth circular arc with a radius no less than 100mm.
5.2.3 For N2 and N3 vehicles, if the line 300mm behind the closer tangent plane of the tire circumference given in 5.2.1a) falls onto the driving cab, the front edge shall not be greater than 100 mm from the rear panel of the cab, and if necessary, it shall be incurved into an angle of no more than 45°. In such case, the requirements of 5.2.2 are not applicable.
5.2.4 For N2 and N3 vehicles, the requirements of 5.2.2 may apply if the line 300mm behind the closer tangent plane of the tire circumference given in 5.2.1a) falls behind the driving cab and the front edge is not greater than 100 mm from the rear panel of the cab.
5.3 The rear edge of lateral protection device shall be within 300 mm in front of the closer tangent plane of the tire circumference, which is the vertical plane perpendicular to the longitudinal section of the vehicle; a continuous vertical member is not essential for the rear edge.
5.4 The requirements specified in 5.2 and 5.3 are independent, and cannot be combined. However, for vehicles with dual steering axles, if the wheelbase is not more than 2,100 mm, there will be no requirements for the lateral protection devices between the two axles.
