This standard replaces GB/T 2524-2010 Titanium sponge. In addition to a number of editorial changes, the following main technical changes have been made with respect to GB/T 2524-2010:
——Some chemical composition indexes have been modified (see Table 1; Table 1 of 2010 edition);
——The requirements for "Ni, Cr and sum of other impurities" have been added (see Table 1);
——The requirements for dimensional specification of product particle size have been modified (see 3.3.1; 3.3.1 of 2010 edition);
——The acceptance requirements for titanium sponge have been modified (see 5.1.2; 5.1.2 of 2010 edition);

Titanium sponge
1 Scope
This standard specifies the technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transportation, storage, quality certificate and order form (or contract) of the titanium sponge.
This standard is applicable to titanium sponge produced by titanium tetrachloride reduced by magnesium in vacuum distillation (referred to as magnesium reduction process).

3 Technical requirements
3.1 Product classification
Titanium sponge products are divided into seven grades (designations) according to the chemical composition and Brinell hardness, which are MHT-95, MHT-100, MHT-110, MHT-125, MHT-140, MHT-160 and MHT-200.
3.2 Chemical composition and Brinell hardness
3.2.1 The chemical composition and Brinell hardness of titanium sponge products shall comply with the regulations in Table 1.

a Other impurities generally include (but are not limited to) Al, Sn, V, Mo, Zr, Cu, Er and Y; the content of Al and Sn impurity elements at Grade 1 and above shall not be more than 0.030%, which is not included in the sum of other impurities specified in this table; Y content is not greater than 0.005%; the supplier and purchaser shall negotiate and indicate in the order form (or contract).
3.2.2 The mass fraction of titanium is remainder of 100% subtracting the sum of measured values of impurities in Table 1.
3.2.3 The effective digits of the analytical value and Brinell hardness testing value in the chemical composition analysis report shall be consistent with those of the corresponding limit of the corresponding product grade (designation) in this standard, and the digits after the effective digits shall be rounded off according to the rules specified in GB/T 8170.
3.2.4 For the analysis data of impurity elements other than those specified in Table 1, the supplier is not required to provide if the purchaser has no requirement, but shall monitor their contents to meet the requirements for "the sum of other impurity elements" specified in Table 1; the supplier and the purchaser shall negotiate and indicate in the order form (or contract) if the purchaser has special requirements for other impurities.
3.3 Particle size
3.3.1 The particle size specifications of titanium sponge products shall comply with the regulations in Table 2.

3.3.2 The weight of products with particle size greater than the upper limit in standard-size products shall not be greater than 5% of the total weight of batch products, in which the maximum particle size shall not be greater than 40 mm, and the weight of products with particle size less than the lower limit shall not be greater than 5% of the total weight of batch products.
3.3.3 The weight of products with particle size greater than the upper limit in small-size products shall not be greater than 5% of the total weight of batch products, and the weight of products with particle size less than the lower limit shall not be greater than 5% of the total weight of batch products.
3.3.4 The weight of products with particle size greater than the upper limit in fine-size products shall not be greater than 5% of the total weight of batch products, and the weight of products with particle size less than the lower limit shall not be greater than 5% of the total weight of batch products.
3.3.5 If there are requirements for products with other particle sizes or other special requirements for the particle size, the supplier and the purchaser shall negotiate and indicate in the purchase order (or contract).
3.4 Appearance quality
3.4.1 The product shall be sponge-like in light gray or silver gray, with clean surface, and with no visible inclusions, and partially defective titanium sponge blocks may be allowed.
3.4.2 Defective titanium sponge blocks refer to: oxidized titanium sponge blocks in obvious dark yellow or bright yellow; oxidized and nitrogen-rich titanium sponge blocks with dark yellow or bright yellow marks; titanium sponge blocks with obvious chloride residue; titanium sponge blocks with residue; titanium sponge blocks of high iron and its associated elements; and titanium sponge with dark gray surface and with moisture absorption marks, etc. Refer to Annex A for typical defective titanium sponge blocks. Any special requirements shall be indicated in the order form (or contract).
3.4.3 The weight of defective titanium sponge blocks in Grade 0A, Grade 0 and Grade 1 products shall not exceed 0.05% of the total weight of batch products; the weight of defective titanium sponge blocks in Grade 2 and Grade 3 products shall not exceed 0.1% of the total weight of batch products.
4 Test methods
4.1 The chemical composition analysis of the products shall be carried out according to the regulations of GB/T 4698. The analysis method of impurity elements not specified in GB/T 4698 shall be determined by the supplier, and special requirements from the purchaser (if any) shall be determined by the supplier and the purchaser through negotiation.
4.2 The Brinell hardness test of the products shall be carried out in accordance with the regulations of GB/T 231.1. See B.2.3 of Annex B for the determination of indentation position.
4.3 Particle size inspection of the products shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of B.5.2 (or the method agreed by the supplier and the purchaser).
4.4 The appearance quality inspection of the products shall be carried out in accordance with the requirements of B.5.1.
5 Inspection rules
5.1 Inspection and acceptance
5.1.1 Titanium sponges shall be inspected by the supplier. The supplier shall ensure that the quality of the products meets the requirements of this standard and order form (or contract), and fill in the quality certificate.
5.1.2 The purchaser shall inspect the products received according to the regulations of this standard and the order form (or contract). If the chemical composition and Brinell hardness inspection results are inconsistent with the regulations of this standard and the order form (or contract), the purchaser shall submit them to the supplier within 60 days from the date of receiving the products; if the particle size inspection results and appearance quality are inconsistent with the regulations of this standard and the order form (or contract), the purchaser shall submit them to the supplier within six months from the date of receiving the products; those issues above shall be settled through negotiation between the supply and purchaser. If arbitration is required, the sampling shall be conducted by the supplier and the purchaser in accordance with the regulations of B.4 in the products received by the purchaser.
