1 Scope
This standard specifies the preparation, grinding and polishing of specimen, display and inspection of microstructure, on-site metallographic and test record for inspection of microstructure for metals.
This standard is applicable to the operation method for inspection of metal structure with metalloscope.

3 Specimen Preparation
3.1 Specimen selection
3.1.1 General rules
The metallographic specimen selected shall objectively and comprehensively represent the researched material as possible, so as to ensure the effectiveness of inspection. The cutting directions, positions and quantity of specimens shall be determined according to the requirements of metalworking method, inspection purpose, relevant standards or mutual agreement.
3.1.2 Routine inspection
Unless otherwise specified in product standard, it is suggested to select in the position capable of representing the material characteristics; the specimen should include a complete processing and affected area. For example, the steel strip or wire specimen should be cut at the end of coil; the casting specimen should include the maximum segregation and the minimum segregation areas; the heat treatment specimen should contain a complete heat treatment layer; the surface treatment specimen should include all surface treatment layers; the welded specimen should include weld, heat-affected area and base material.
