This standard is developed in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This standard replaces JC/T 414-2000 Diatomite and its methods. In addition to editorial changes, the following main technical changes have been made with respect to JC/T 414-2000:
——The standard name is changed from "Diatomite and its test methods" to "Diatomite";
——The scope of application is changed from "applicable to lumpish and powdery diatomite products" to "applicable to natural diatomite products" (see Clause 1; Clause 1 of Edition 2000);
——The general requirements are deleted (see Clause 3 of Edition 2000);
——The particle size classification is canceled (see 4.1 of Edition 2000;
——The classification and labeling are modified (see Clause 3; Clause 4 of Edition 2000;
——The item name "bulk density" is modified to "tap bulk density" (see Table 1 and 5.11; Table 1 and 6.10 of Edition 2000);
——The requirements for diatom content are added to the technical indexes, and the determination method for diatom content is added to the test methods (see Table 1 and 5.5; Table 1 of Edition 2000);
——The physical and chemical properties indexes of lump ores are canceled, so are the index of weight of screen residue and its test method; the indexes of aluminum oxide, ferric oxide, calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, ignition loss and moisture are changed to "be determined through consultation between the customer and the supplier" (see Table 1; Table 1 and 6.11 of Edition 2000);
——The specific surface area index is changed from "19.0m2/g~65.0m2/g" to "15.0m2/g~100.0m2/g" (see Table 1; Table 1 of Edition 2000);
——The microscopic requirement expression is changed to "when observed under a microscope, complete diatom shells or shell fragments with certain geometry and pore structure may be seen" (see 4.2; 5.2 of Edition 2000);
——Provisions on sample preparation are added (see 5.1);
——The determination method for "tap bulk density” is changed from a manual one to a mechanical one (see 5.11; 6.10 of Edition 2000);
——The “diatom content” is added into the end-of-manufacturing inspection items (see 6.3.1; 7.3.1 of Edition 2000);
——The inspection rules are remade (see Clause 6; Clause 7 of Edition 2000);
——That "300t of diatomite products of the same origin, same specification and same class shall be taken as a batch" is specified (see 6.1; 7.1 of Edition 2000);
——The method of sampling for moisture determination is defined separately (see 6.2.3);
——The requirements of origin and product certificate have been added to the product mark (see 7.1).
This standard was proposed by China Building Materials Federation.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of SAC/TC 406 National Technical Committee on Non-metallic Mineral Products of Standardization Administration of China.
The previous editions of this standard are as follows:

Diatomite
1 Scope
This standard specifies the classification and labeling, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, packaging, transportation and storage with respect to diatomite products.
This standard is applicable to natural diatomite products.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.

3 Classification and labeling
3.1 Product classification
Diatomite products are classified into six classes according to diatom content, which are represented by Roman numerals I, II, III, IV, V and VI.
3.2 Product labeling
A diatomite product is labeled with its product name, this standard number and its class code in sequence.
Example: the second-class diatomite is labeled as
Diatomite JC/T 414-II
4 Requirements
4.1 Appearance
Diatomite products are not allowed to contain foreign inclusions, and powdery products shall be loose.
4.2 Microstructure
When diatomite products are observed under a microscope, complete diatom shells or shell fragments with certain geometry and pore structure may be seen.
4.3 Physical and chemical properties
The physical and chemical properties of diatomite products shall be in accordance with those specified in Table 1.

5 Test methods
5.1 Specimen preparation
5.1.1 Evenly mix the sample taken according to 6.2, and first carry out appearance inspection. Then, reduce it to two specimens of 800g and 200g respectively by quartering. Use the 800g specimen for the determination of microstructure, tap bulk density, pH value and specific surface area. Grind the 200g specimen further until the particle size is less than 0.075mm, and then reduce it to a 100g specimen by quartering for chemical analysis and determination of diatom content.
5.1.2 Spread the specimens used for chemical analysis and diatom content determination on a clean flat surface, absorb the iron scraps brought in when the samples are broken with a magnet, then reduce them into a specimen of about 40g by quartering; mix it well, put it in a weighing bottle and dry the specimen at 105℃~110℃ for 3h; then move the bottle out, cover it with a bottle cap, and cool it to room temperature in a dryer for later use.
