Limit of harmful substances of marine coatings
1 Scope
This standard specifies the terms and definitions, product classification, requirements, test methods, inspection rules and packaging marks with respect to the allowable limits of harmful substances of marine coatings to human body and the environment.
This standard is applicable to all kinds of marine coatings made of steel, light alloy, glass fiber reinforced plastic, etc. as main hull materials.
This standard is not applicable to fire retardant coating for ships.

structures capable of sailing and berthing in waters, engaging in transportation, fighting, operations, scientific research, etc.
[GB/T 7727.1-2008, Definition 2.1]
3.2
steel ship
ship that uses steel as the main material for its hull structure
[GB/T 7727.1-2008, Definition 9.1]
3.3
marine coatings
general term of various coatings applied to various parts of the ship to prevent seawater, marine atmospheric corrosion and marine organism adhesion and to meet the special requirements of the ship
[GB 12900-1991, Definition 2.4.2]
3.4

3.7
biocide
a type of additive added to coatings to prevent organisms from eroding substrates, coatings, or their paint films through microbial degradation
[GB/T 5206-2015, Definition 2.27]
4 Product classification
In this standard, marine coatings are divided into shop primer, primer, finish, general primer, anti-fouling paint, maintenance paint and other coatings.
Where, anti-fouling paint is divided into:
——Type I, refers to self-polishing or abrasive anti-fouling paint containing biocide;
——Type II, refers to non-self polishing or non-abrasive anti-fouling paint containing biocide;
——Type III, refers to non-self polishing or non-abrasive anti-fouling paint without biocide.
5 Requirements
5.1 The VOC content in solvent-based coating products shall meet the limit requirements in Table 1. The limit requirement is limited to marine coatings for steel ship, excluding coatings for various parts and components in ship manufacturing.
Table 1 Limits of VOC
Product type Limit/(g/L)
Shop primer Inorganic ≤ 700
Organic ≤ 680
Primer a ≤ 550
Finish b ≤ 500
General primer c ≤ 400
Anti-fouling paint Types I and II ≤ 500
Type III ≤ 450
Maintenance paint d ≤ 600
Other coatings e ≤ 500
It shall be determined after mixing according to the specified ratio and dilution ratio of the product. If the amount of diluent used is within a certain range, it shall be determined after dilution according to the recommended maximum dilution.
a Anticorrosive coating applied to the substrate of ship target area (including but not limited to railings, outer hull and deck) outside the cabin.
b Surface coating applied for beautifying non immersed area.
c Anticorrosive coating applied to substrates of various cabin parts including ballast tank.
d Various coatings used in ship repair coating.
e Marine coatings that do not belong to the above product types, which do not include special types of coatings used in marine painting, such as signal paints and antirust oils.
5.2 The contents of limited solvents, heavy metals, biocides and asbestos harmful substances in various marine coating products shall meet the limit requirements in Table 2. Coatings for various parts and components used in ship manufacturing shall meet the limit requirements for heavy metals and asbestos harmful substances in Table 2 (limited solvents and biocides are not tested).
