GB/T 29840-2013 Vanadium flow battery - Terminology
3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 29840-2013 and the following apply. For the convenience of application, some terms and definitions specified in GB/T 29840-2013 are listed below.
3.1
ohmic polarization resistance
sum of internal resistances of a single cell caused by electronic and ionic resistance, in Ω
3.2
single cell
basic unit of vanadium flow battery, mainly composed of a group of positive and negative electrodes and an ion conductive membrane separating the electrodes
[Term and definition 2.21.1, GB/T 29840-2013]
3.3
electrochemical polarization resistance
electrochemical reaction resistance in a single cell, in Ω
Electrochemical polarization resistance is related to the electrode activity, structure and operating conditions of single cell.
3.4
concentration polarization resistance
resistance caused by the liquid-phase mass transfer process from the electrolyte to the electrode surface, in Ω
4 General requirements
Test environment conditions:
——temperature: 25±5℃;
——air humidity: 5%~95%.
The special requirements for test environment conditions, if any, are determined by the supplier and the demander through negotiation.
5 Composition of single cell
5.1 General
A single cell shall contain all or part of the following components:
a) one ion conductive membrane;
b) two electrodes;
c) two electrode frames;
d) two bipolar plates;
e) two collectors;
f) two end plates with liquid inlet and outlet;
g) seals, sealing materials connecting the above components;
h) fasteners, such as bolts, springs and washers;
i) other auxiliary components.
The composition of a single cell is schematically shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 Schematic composition of single cell
5.2 Electrode size
The electrode area is recommended to be not less than 50cm2.
6 Assembly of single cell
Some specific processes in the following assembly operation shall be documented:
a) location of ion conductive membrane;
b) location of electrode;
c) location of collector;
d) location of bipolar plate;
e) installation of seals/sealing;
f) location of fixing device or assembly fixture;
g) relevant requirements on which the assembly process is based, for example, the compression ratio of electrode materials, bolt fastening sequence, compression spring and final torque requirements.
After assembly, the battery shall be checked for internal and external leakage according to the method described in 8.3 hereof.
