This standard is developed in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This standard replaces GB 5920-2008 Photometric characteristics of front and rear position lamps, end-outline marker lamps and stop lamps for motor vehicles and their trailers, and in addition to a number of editorial changes, the following technical changes have been made with respect to GB 5920-2008:
——definition of single lamp is modified, and term “interdependent lamp” is introduced;
—— technical requirements of variable luminous intensity is set up for rear position lamps, rear end-outline marker lamps and stop lamps;
—— the requirement for photometric angle range of device is added;
—— LED light source is introduced;
—— the test requirement for light color is changed.
This standard is developed by reference to ECE R7 Rev 6 Uniform provisions concerning the approval of front and fear position lamps, stop-lamps and end-outline marker lamps for motor vehicles (except motor cycles) and their trailers including corresponding amendment ECE R7 Rec.6 Amend.4. The following main differences have been made:
—— management provision is deleted;
—— Annex "Minimum requirement for conformity of production control procedures" is deleted.
—— the inspection rules are added.
Other major technical requirements, e.g. general requirements, photometric performance, light color and test methods, are consistent with those in ECE R7 Rev.6.
This standard was proposed by and is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China.
The previous edition of this standard is as follows:
—— GB 5920-1986, GB 5920-1994, GB 5920-1999, and GB 5920-2008.
Photometric characteristics of front and rear position lamps, end-outline marker lamps and stop lamps for motor vehicles and their trailers
1 Scope
This standard specifies technical requirements, test methods and inspection rules of photometric characteristics of front and rear position lamps, end-outline marker lamps and stop lamps for motor vehicles and trailers
This standard is applicable to all kinds of front and rear position lamps, end-outline marker lamps and stop lamps for motor vehicles of Types M, N and O and trailers.
In this standard, all kinds of signal lamps above are also called devices.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB 4599 and GB 4785 as well as the following apply.
3.1
variable intensity control
a device that can automatically control the rear signal device which produces different levels of luminous intensity to ensure a stable, identifiable light signal. The variable intensity control is a part of the device or vehicle, or is independent from the the above device and vehicle
3.2
lamps marked “D”
the independent lamps that have passed the corresponding type inspection separately , and they can be used alone or in combination as a single lamp
3.3
interdependent lamp system
two or three interdependent grouped lamps with the a combination of two or three interdependent lamps with the same functions
3.4
interdependent lamp
the devices as a part of the interdependent lamp system, which are lighted simultaneously while working; for the devices, an independent apparent surface and a separate lamp body are provided in the direction of the reference axis, and a separate light source may be equipped
3.5
stop lamp
the lamp to indicate to other road users who are behind the vehicle that the vehicle is braking. The stop lamp may be lighted by a retarder or a similar device
3.5.1
category S1
a stop lamps that emit stable intensity and are installed in pairs
3.5.2
category S2
a stop lamps that emit variable intensity and are installed in pairs
3.5.3
category S3
a high-position stop lamps that emit stable intensity
3.5.4
category S4
a high-position stop lamps that emit variable intensity
3.6
single lamp
single lamp may be composed by the following methods:
a) It may be a device or a part of a device equipped with a light signal function, one or more light sources and an apparent surface on the reference axis which may be continuous or composed of two or more separate parts. If the apparent surface is not continuous, the single lamp shall be installed in one of the following ways:
1) as for the apparent surfaces of all parts in the direction of the reference axis after installation, the sum of their areas projected on the plane perpendicular to the reference axis is not less than 60% of the minimum quadrilateral area enclosing the projection of the above apparent surface, or
2) measure the distance between two adjacent parts in the direction perpendicular to the reference axis, and the distance is not greater than 75 mm.
b) Alternatively, it may be a combination of two lamps marked “D” with the same functions whether they are identical or not, which is installed in one of the following ways:
1) as for the apparent surfaces of all parts in the direction of the reference axis after installation, the sum of their areas projected on the plane perpendicular to the reference axis is not less than 60% of the minimum quadrilateral area surrounding the projection of the above apparent surface, or
2) measure the distance between two adjacent parts in the direction perpendicular to the reference axis, and the distance is not greater than 75 mm.
c) Alternatively, it may be any interdependent lamp system consisting of two or three interdependent lamps with the same functions, which is installed in one of the following ways:
1) as for the apparent surfaces of all parts in the direction of the reference axis after installation, the sum of their areas projected on the plane perpendicular to the reference axis is not less than 60% of the minimum quadrilateral area enclosing the projection of the above apparent surface, or
2) measure the distance between two adjacent parts in the direction perpendicular to the reference axis, and the distance is not greater than 75 mm.
4 Different types of devices
Devices which differ in such essential respects as:
a) the trade name or mark;
b) the characteristics of the optical system (levels of intensity, light distribution angles, type of light source used or light source module, etc.);
c) the variable intensity control.
However, a change of the color of light sources or the color of any filter does not constitute a change of type.
5 Requirements
5.1 General requirements
5.1.1 The front and rear position lamps, end-outline marker lamps and stop lamps shall be so designed and produced that in normal conditions of use, and notwithstanding the vibrations to which they may be subjected in such use, their satisfactory operation remains assured and they retain the characteristics prescribed by this standard.
5.1.2 Front and rear position lamps may be combined into grouped lamps, combined lamps and reciprocally incorporated lamps and also may be used as end-outline marker lamps.
5.1.3 If the replaceable light source is used on the device, the light source shall meet the those specified in GB/T 15766.1, ECE R37 or ECE R128 The device shall be designed such that the light source can only be installed in the correct position.
5.1.4 If the light source module is used in the device, its design shall meet the following requirements:
a) Each light source module can only be installed in the correct position, and the light source module except 5.1.3 can only be removed by tools.
b) If there is more than one light source module in the same lamp chamber of a device, the light source modules with different characteristics shall not be interchangeable.
c) Mechanical interchange with replaceable light sources is not possible even with tools.
d) The light source module can prevent mishandling.
5.1.5 For the reciprocally incorporated position lamp which shares light sources of other functions, it may be designed to be operatable under the control of an additional system regulating the luminous intensity. In this case, for the rear position lamp reciprocally incorporated with the stop lamp, the device shall be designed as multiple light sources connected in parallel or mounted on a vehicle equipped with fault monitoring system for this function.
