3 Terms
pyrotechnic device
device composed of ignition element, charge and functional mechanism, which complete the specific functions by using energy of the charge through the functional mechanism
4 Classification
The pyrotechnic devices are classified based on the function and structure.
4.1 Ejection actuation type
4.1.1 Unlock type, such as unlocking bolts, explosive bolts, parachute removers, etc.
4.1.2 Ejection separation type, such as actuating devices, catapults, parachute barrels, etc.
4.1.3 Cutting type, such as rope cutters, linear shaped charge, time-delay parachute cord cutters, etc.
4.2 Thrust type
Thrust type, such as micro solid motors, piston-type pollution-free explosive cords, etc.
4.3 Cord type
Cord type, such as linear shaped charge, mild explosive cord, shaped explosive cord, detonating cord, confined explosive cord, piston-type pollution-free explosive cord, etc.
4.4 Other types
Other types, such as gas switches, explosion valves, safety and de-safety devices, etc.
5 Technical requirements
5.1 Basic requirements
5.1.1 The pyrotechnic device shall be simple in structure, small in size, low in weight, safe and reliable, and universal and interchangeable.
5.1.2 The external surface of pyrotechnic device shall be free from defects that affect performance, such as scratches, nicks, burrs, stains and rust spots failing to meet the requirements of technical documents.
5.1.3 The dimension and tolerance of pyrotechnic device shall meet the requirements of technical documents.
5.1.4 The charging position of pyrotechnic device shall be sealed, and the sealing performance shall meet the environmental requirements and product performance requirements.
5.1.5 Redundancy shall be adopted for pyrotechnic devices with key characteristics, and the failure of any single initiating element shall not cause the function failure or performance degradation of pyrotechnic devices.
5.1.5.1 More than two charges should be adopted for ejection actuation type to ensure the function of pyrotechnic device. Where the satellite structure only allows a single charge, the charge shall be equipped with double initiators to ensure the function of pyrotechnic device
5.1.5.2 More than two ignition boxes or double initiators should be adopted for thrust type to ensure the function of pyrotechnic device.
5.1.5.3 More than two cords should be connected in parallel for cord type. Where only one cord is allowed due to satellite structure, at least one electric initiator is installed at each end of the cord.
5.1.6 When multiple pyrotechnic devices are required to actuate at the same time, the synchronization of pyrotechnic devices shall comply with the satellite technical specifications.
5.1.7 The ignition energy of pyrotechnic device shall be coordinated with the power supply system of satellite and related systems.
5.1.8 The internal defects of pyrotechnic devices shall be subjected to radiographic inspection. Technical requirements and inspection methods shall comply with special technical specifications.
5.2 Materials
5.2.1 The material selection for pyrotechnic devices shall meet the following requirements:
a. the materials shall meet the requirements of national standards, national military standards, professional standards or enterprise standards;
b. the quality and state of materials shall be uniform; structural materials bearing gas pressure shall be subjected to non-destructive inspection;
c. except explosives, materials that are flammable, prone to release toxic gases and toxic combustion products are generally not used; unless otherwise specified, materials that are prone to mold are prohibited;
d. materials with low gas release shall be selected in high vacuum environment;
e. generally, volatile materials shall not be selected. If they are selected, the condensate mass of the materials shall be determined under specified conditions, and shall comply with special technical specifications.
5.2.2 The explosive selection for pyrotechnic devices shall also meet the following requirements:
a. the decomposition, spontaneous ignition and melting temperature of the explosive shall be at least 30℃ higher than the highest environmental temperature of the pyrotechnic device predicted during storage, operation, installation, transportation, launch and flight;
b. under the condition of meeting the reliability requirements, the dosage of sensitive initiating explosive shall be controlled at the lowest limit.
5.2.3 Lubricant is allowed to be used on sliding surfaces between parts and components under the condition of ensuring that lubricant does not contact with charge.
The following factors shall be considered during lubricant selection: gas release under vacuum conditions; temperature limit that can be withstood; working performance after long-term storage and compatibility with other materials.
