Identification of polyvinyl chloride and polyurethane imitation leather
1 Scope
This standard specifies the infrared spectroscopy and verification method for identifying whether the artificial leather and synthetic leather (hereinafter referred to as “imitation leather”) are made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyurethane (PU), and gives the analysis steps and guidelines for spectrum elucidation.
This standard is applicable to the imitation leather with fabric as base material, PVC and PU as main coating materials, excluding the laminated leather with animal leather and reclaimed leather as base material. It may serve as a reference for the identification of coating materials of composite materials containing animal leather and reclaimed leather.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
imitation leather
general terms of artificially synthetized animal leather substitutes which are composed of coating and fabric base materials, including artificial leather and synthetic leather, excluding laminated leather with animal leather as base material
3.2
coating structure
imitation leather coating generally includes surface finishing layer and main coating layer, and the main coating may be a multi-layer composite structure.
See Figure 1 for the schematic diagram for cross-sectional structure of common imitation leather

3.3
polyvinyl chloride imitation leather
imitation leather mainly made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin as the main coating layer
3.4
polyurethane imitation leather
imitation leather mainly made of polyurethane (PU) resin as the main coating layer
3.5
PU/PVC composite imitation leather
imitation leather produced with PU resin as coating surface and PVC resin as coating primer, which is also called semi-PU leather
3.6
reclaimed leather
leather substitute which is made by tearing and grinding the leftover materials of leather into fibers, bonding the fibers in a mechanical and physical state with bonding agent, extruding the fibers into sheets for splitting, grinding and surface finishing
