Protective clothing - flame retardant protective clothing
1 Scope
This standard specifies the grading, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, identification, packaging and storage of flame retardant protective clothing.
This standard applies to flame retardant protective clothing used in places with open flames, sparks, flammable substances and flashover risks.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions in GB/T 12903 and GB/T 3291.3 as well as the followings apply.
3.1
flame retardant protective clothing
protective clothing that can prevent itself from igniting, burning with or without flame within certain time after contacting with flames and hot objects.
3.2
afterflame time
persistent flame burning time of material after the ignition source is removed under specified test conditions
Note 1: in seconds (s).
Note 2: rewritten from definition 2.145 in GB/T 3291.3-1997.
3.3
afterglow time
persistent flameless burning time of material after flame burning ends or the ignition source is removed in case of flameless burning under specified test conditions
Note 1: in seconds (s).
Note 2: in this standard, smoldering refers to flameless combustion which occurs at the edge of the damaged area and spreads along with the damaged area. In the damaged area, red heat will occur in some areas due to continuous release of the heat absorbed at the early stage, and the duration of the red heat will not be counted into the smoldering time.
Note 3: rewritten from definition 2.146 in GB/T 3291.3-1997.
3.4
damaged length
maximum length of the damaged part of material in specified direction at stated test conditions
Note1: in mm.
Note 2: rewritten from definition 2.157 in GB/T 3291.3-1997.
3.5
thermal protective performance; TPP
accumulated energy determined by the intersection of the measured heat transfer reaction curve and Stoll curve of the material in accumulated time during testing of thermal protective material
Note 1: in kW·s/m2.
Note 2: rewritten from definition 3.1 in GB/T 38302-2019.
3.6
inherent flame retardant fabric
flame retardant fabric with corresponding flame retardant performance grade only by forming flame retardant fiber materials or the combination of flame retardant fiber materials of fabric, without any flame retardant after-treatment
3.7
after treatment flame retardant fabric
fabric with flame retardancy obtained by chemically treating fibers, yarns and fabrics that have no flame retardancy or have insufficient flame retardancy
3.8
outer shell/layer
material used for the outermost layer of clothing
3.9
lining
the innermost layer of clothing used to cover the inner surface of clothing in whole or in part
