Ultrasonic inspection of wrought aluminium and magnesium alloy products
1 Scope
This document describes the ultrasonic inspection methods for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy, wrought magnesium and magnesium alloy products.
This document is applicable to the ultrasonic inspection of wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy, wrought magnesium and magnesium alloy products by using ultrasonic pulse reflection technology.
This document is not applicable to the ultrasonic inspection of castings, welded parts and laminated composites made of aluminum, magnesium and their alloys.

For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 12604.1 apply.
4 Method overview
The piezoelectric crystal unit in the probe will generate ultrasonic wave under the excitation of electrical pulse, and the ultrasonic wave will propagate in the inspected sample through coupling medium. In case of any defect (heterogeneous interface), reflected wave and refracted wave will be generated and received by the probe, then the piezoelectric crystal unit will convert the ultrasonic wave into an electrical signal, which will be received by the instrument for signal processing, amplification and display. The display information will be compared with the ultrasonic response signal of the known ultrasonic reference reflector specified in the acceptance standard, and the quantity and position of the defects detected will be evaluated to evaluate the quality of the inspected sample.
Note 1: Factors, such as surface state and geometric shape of the inspected sample, and inclination of ultrasonic beam to the incident surface, may affect the defect and reduce the amplitude of bottom reflected wave, and thus seriously reduces the reliability of inspection results of the ultrasonic inspection method specified in this document.
Note 2: The evaluation of defect equivalent value is affected by factors such as characteristics of probe, state of defect surface, and nature and shape of defect. The comparison evaluation on the data of ultrasonic inspection defect test specified in this document with the data of approved ultrasonic reference reflector test is carried out under limited conditions, so it is difficult to determine the actual size of the defect detected by the inspected sample.
Note 3: Since there are many interacting variables in the inspection system which will affect the results of ultrasonic inspection, it is difficult to determine the actual quantitative influence of the defect detected on the mechanical properties of the inspected sample. Although this method provides a reliable method of quality control in the manufacture of a product, it is not appropriate to serve it as a specific indication of the final properties and quality of workpiece processed in the inspection of product in this document.
