3.1
background
surface of workpiece serving as a foil to penetrant indication during penetrant testing, usually a surface covered with developer or a natural surface
3.2
relevant indication
flaw indication
penetrant indication caused by flaws during penetrant testing
3.3
non-relevant indication
penetrant indication caused by processing technique, part structure, shape or mechanical damage
3.4
false indication
penetrant indication caused by penetrant contamination
3.5
explanation
process of analyzing the penetrant indications observed and determining the causes and classification of such indications
4 Method Summary
Penetrant testing, a non-destructive testing method based on capillary phenomenon, is used for testing surface breaking flaws of non-porous metal and non-metal specimens. The basic principle is to infiltrate penetrant into the surface breaking flaws of solid materials under the capillary action of liquid. And then precipitate the infiltrated penetrant out to the surface with the developer to indicate the presence of flaws. The schematic diagram of penetrant testing is shown in Figure 1.

5 Safety Requirements
The safety requirements during testing shall at least include:
a) Testing personnel shall observe the safety requirements of the testing site, and wear protective clothing and relevant protective devices according to the requirements of the testing site;
b) It shall be noted that the penetrant used for testing is flammable, explosive and environmental polluting, and shall be kept ventilated and protected from fire during storage and testing;
c) Attention shall be drawn to various safety hazards, such as bumping, electric shock, falling, crushing, shearing, tangling, slipping, drowning, burning, etc.;
d) The filter plate of black light shall be free of cracks. Avoid illuminating human eyes directly with the black light.
This chapter does not list all the safety requirements for testing. Users referring to this part shall establish safety guidelines prior to testing.
6 Personnel Requirements
Personnel engaged in penetrant testing of amusement equipments shall comply with the relevant provisions of GB/T 34370.1, in addition, the uncorrected or corrected visual acuity of the penetrant testing personnel shall not be inferior to 5.0 (with decimal record of 1.0) and she/he shall have no color blindness. The testing method shall be consistent with those specified in GB/T 11533. The testing personnel shall be subjected to visual acuity test every 12 months.
7 Testing Apparatus and Accessories
7.1 Penetrant
7.1.1 The penetrant used in this part shall be a complete set of cans, including penetrant, cleaning agent and developer.
7.1.2 Manufacturing date and expiration date shall be indicated on the penetrant, which shall be accompanied by a product certificate and instruction for use.
7.1.3 Penetrant shall have good testing performance, posing no corrosion to the workpiece and exerting no toxic effect on human body.
7.1.4 The penetrant shall be stored in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer. The surface of the aerosol shall not be rusted and the aerosol shall be free from leakage.
7.1.5 The fluorescence efficiency of fluorescent penetrant shall not be lower than 75%. And the testing shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant provisions of JB/T 7523.
7.1.6 If the wet developer used is turbid, discolored or it is difficult to form a thin and even imaging layer, it shall be scrapped.
7.1.7 For austenitic stainless steel, the weight ratio of chlorine and fluorine in the residue after evaporation of a certain amount of penetrant shall not exceed 1%. For higher requirements, it shall be agreed upon negotiation between the Supplier and the Demander.
7.1.8 The penetrant shall be selected according to the specific conditions of the amusement equipments. Different types of penetrant shall not be mixed for using on the same workpiece.
