Martindale abrasion and pilling tester
1 Scope
This standard specifies the terms and definitions, basic functions and parameters, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, and marking, packaging, transportation and storage of Martindale abrasion and pilling tester.
This standard is applicable to the Martindale abrasion and pilling tester (hereinafter referred to as "Martindale tester") used for the abrasion and pilling resistance tests of textiles.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

4 Basic functions and parameters
4.1 Basic functions
4.1.1 Martindale tester has the function of performing abrasion test and pilling test.
4.1.2 Martindale tester has the function of pre-setting and recording the number of abrasion or that of pilling.
4.1.3 Martindale tester is provided with the specimen installation auxiliary device during the pilling test.
4.2 Basic parameters
4.2.1 The Lissajous figure of the Martindale tester is a closed curvilinear figure composed of two simple harmonic vibrations which are in mutually perpendicular directions and have a frequency ratio of 16:15 as well as the same initial phase.
4.2.2 The maximum counting number of counter is not less than 99,999.
4.2.3 The speed ratio of external transmission gear to internal transmission gear is 16:15.
4.2.4 The specimen press hammer weighs (2.5±0.5)kg and has a diameter of (120±10)mm.
5 Requirements
5.1 Appearance
5.1.1 The external surface of the Martindale tester shall be smooth, flat, and uniform in color.
5.1.2 The electroplated parts of the Martindale tester shall be free from burrs, skip plating and peeling; the remaining surface-treated parts shall be uniform in color on the surface.
5.1.3 The parts and components of the Martindale tester shall be free from obvious bumps and scratches.
5.1.4 The painting of the Martindale tester shall be in accordance with those specified in FZ/T 90074.
5.2 Complete machine performance
5.2.1 The flexibility of the specimen holder to rotate in the bushing assembly shall be in accordance with those specified in GB/T 21196.1-2007, 7.2.
5.2.2 The surface parallelism between the abrading table and the insert block of specimen holder shall be in accordance with those specified in GB/T 21196.1-2007, 7.3.1.
5.2.3 After assembly, the up-and-down movement range of specimen holder shall be 6.5mm~8.5mm.
5.2.4 After assembly of specimen holder, the pin shaft shall be capable of rotating freely in the busing, without obvious shaking.
5.2.5 After assembly of specimen holder, the pin shaft shall be capable of being pulled up and down freely and freely falling when being lifted up to the highest position (the former 5.2.6 is canceled).
5.2.6 The parallelism between the surface of the abrading table and the upper guide plate shall be in accordance with those specified in GB/T 21196.1-2007, 7.3.2.
5.2.7 The rotational speed of the external transmission gear shall be (47.5±2.5)r/min, and that of the internal transmission gear shall be (44.5±2.4)r/min.
5.2.8 The maximum stroke in the longitudinal and transverse directions shall be (60.5±0.5)mm during abrasion test and shall be (24.0±0.5)mm during pilling test.
5.2.9 The Lissajous figure shall be symmetrical in shape, evenly spaced, and periodically coincident.
5.2.10 The level indicator of the Martindale tester shall have an indication accuracy of not less than 3mm/m.
5.2.11 All the functions such as setting, display and control of the Martindale tester shall be normal.
5.2.12 The Martindale tester shall work stably without abnormal vibration.
5.2.13 The abrading table shall not be loose on the base.
5.2.14 The abrading table and each specimen holder shall be in good meshing engagement when they are not coated with any backing.
5.2.15 The layout of the transmission gears shall be such that the hot gas discharged from the heat sink does not directly affect the friction surface.
5.3 Main parts and components
5.3.1 Abrading table
5.3.1.1 The abrading table shall have a surface diameter of (121.0±1.0)mm.
5.3.1.2 The surface flatness of the abrading table shall not be greater than 0.05mm.
5.3.2 Abrasion specimen holder
5.3.2.1 The abrasion specimen holder assembly shall weigh (198±2)g in total.
5.3.2.2 The insert block of abrasion specimen holder shall have an outside diameter of mm and have a circular surface diameter of (28.5±0.5)mm.
5.3.2.3 As for the abrasion specimen holder, there shall be a height difference of (1.05±0.10)mm between the circular surface of its insert block and the surface of its compression nut.
5.3.3 Pilling specimen holder
The pilling specimen holder assembly shall weigh (155±1)g in total.
5.3.4 Loading block
5.3.4.1 For abrasion test, the large loading block shall weigh (597±3)g and the small loading block (397±3)g.
5.3.4.2 For pilling test, the loading block shall weigh (260±1)g.
5.3.5 Counter
The counter of the Martindale tester shall be accurate, without missing counting or miscounting.
5.4 Noise
The sound pressure level noise emitted by working Martindale tester shall not be greater than 65dB(A).
