3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 14441 and the following apply.
3.1
electrostatic paint spraying
a coating method where atomized liquid coating material is charged or polarized under the action of a high-voltage electric field and adheres to the substrate surface.
[Source: GB/T 14441-2024, 6.1.11, modified]
3.2
working area for electrostatic paint spraying
an area where a certain quantity of flammable or combustible vapors, paint mist, or accumulations of combustible residues exist due to electrostatic paint spraying operations.
3.3
electrostatic atomizer
a pneumatic, electric, hydraulic, ultrasonic, or other type of device that uses centrifugal force or compressed air under the action of electrostatic repulsion to charge liquid coating material with static electricity and fully atomize it, equipped with high-voltage electrostatic protection measures.
3.4
booth for electrostatic paint spraying
a fully or partially enclosed enclosure structure, equipped with adequate mechanical ventilation and lighting, specifically used for electrostatic paint spraying, which prevents the escape of paint mist and solvent vapors and safely directs them into an exhaust filtration system.

4 General Requirements
4.1 The electrostatic paint spraying area shall include the following scopes:
a) The interior of the electrostatic spray booth and the exhaust ducts, and other places where the coating might be directly sprayed;
b) The enclosed interior space of the electrostatic paint spraying production line;
c) Other areas where flammable or combustible vapors, paint mist, or accumulations of combustible residues may be generated.
4.2 The working area for electrostatic paint spraying and its adjacent locations shall be classified for explosion hazards according to GB 50058.
4.3 Equipment installed and used within the working area for electrostatic paint spraying shall comply with GB 3836.15, GB 50058, and the provisions of Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 of this document.
4.4 The configuration of fire extinguishing equipment in the building housing the working area for electrostatic paint spraying shall comply with GB 50140.
4.5 Electrostatic protection measures within the working area for electrostatic paint spraying shall comply with GB 12158 and the provisions of Chapter 6 of this document.
4.6 Safety signs shall be installed in the working area for electrostatic paint spraying according to GB 2894.
5 Electrostatic Spraying Equipment and Facilities
5.1 Electrostatic Spray Guns
Hand-held electrostatic spray guns shall comply with GB 14773.
5.2 High-voltage Electrostatic Generators
5.2.1 A current-limiting safety device shall be provided at the connection point between the high-voltage output of the generator and the high-voltage cable. The shield of the high-voltage cable shall be securely connected to a dedicated ground line.
5.2.2 The power supply for high-voltage electrostatic generators used for painting shall employ explosion-proof terminal devices. The grounding terminal within the terminal device shall be connected to a dedicated ground line.
5.3 Electrodes and Electrostatic Atomizers
5.3.1 Electrodes and electrostatic atomizers shall be securely mounted on bases, brackets, or moving devices and shall have reliable insulation to ground. The insulation resistance shall be greater than 1×10¹⁰ Ω.
5.3.2 When the fixed element is a thin metal wire, the wire shall be tensioned to avoid physical displacement that could cause electrostatic discharge.
5.4 High-voltage Cables and Circuits
5.4.1 Fixed high-voltage cables within the electrostatic spray booth shall be protected by armored cable or conduit. Highly flexible shielded cables with protection against mechanical damage shall be used for frequently moving parts.
5.4.2 The high-voltage circuit shall be designed with safety measures such as overcurrent protection or high-voltage peak protection.
5.5 Automatic Electrostatic Spraying Equipment
5.5.1 The entrance to the spraying area of automatic electrostatic spraying equipment shall be equipped with human-machine safety interlocks and warning lights. When the equipment is operating normally and detects personnel entering the automatic spraying area, the equipment shall stop operation and activate audible and visual alarms.
