3 General Terms
3.1
pressure sensitive adhesion
An adhesion phenomenon sensitive to pressure.
3.2
pressure sensitive adhesive
An adhesive capable of exhibiting pressure sensitive adhesion (3.1). Also known as PSA.
3.3
pressure sensitive adhesive product
A tape or sheet-like product made from pressure sensitive adhesive (3.2).
3.4
pressure sensitive adhesive tape
A tape-like pressure sensitive adhesive product (3.3). Also known as pressure sensitive tape.
3.5
pressure sensitive adhesive sheet
A sheet-like pressure sensitive adhesive product (3.3).
3.6
adhesive side; adhesive face
The side of a pressure sensitive adhesive product coated with pressure sensitive adhesive, possessing tackiness. Also known as the adhesive side or face.
3.7
back side
The side of a pressure sensitive adhesive product not coated with pressure sensitive adhesive; the reverse side of the adhesive face.
3.8
closed side; inner face
After unwinding a double-sided pressure sensitive adhesive tape, the adhesive side that is in contact with the release liner. Also known as the inner face.
3.9
open side; outer face
After unwinding a double-sided pressure sensitive adhesive tape, the adhesive side that is not in contact with the release liner. Also known as the outer face.
3.10
jumbo roll
A rolled pressure sensitive adhesive product after coating, which requires further rewinding or slitting processes to be converted into a finished product convenient for use.
3.11
log roll
A spool-shaped pressure sensitive adhesive product intended for direct cutting without the need for rewinding.
3.12
finished roll
A finished pressure sensitive adhesive tape product convenient for use, made from a jumbo roll or log roll of pressure sensitive adhesive product through slitting or cutting processes.
3.13
cut roll
A finished pressure sensitive adhesive tape product convenient for use, made from a jumbo roll or log roll of pressure sensitive adhesive product through a cutting process.
3.14
spool roll
A finished pressure sensitive adhesive tape product convenient for use, made from a jumbo roll of pressure sensitive adhesive product through slitting and winding processes.
3.15
substrate
The material to which an adhesive tape is applied. Also known as the adherend.
3.16
peeling
The process where the end of a pressure sensitive adhesive product applied to the surface of an adherend lifts or even peels off due to the application of peeling stress.
3.17
cold flow
Deformation of the adhesive layer under no external force at room temperature.
EXAMPLE: Phenomena such as adhesive ooze or an increase in adhesion over time.
4 Component Terms
4.1
acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive
A pressure sensitive adhesive primarily composed of acrylate copolymers. Also known as acrylic PSA.
4.2
rubber pressure sensitive adhesive
A pressure sensitive adhesive formulated primarily with natural rubber and/or synthetic rubber.
4.3
silicone pressure sensitive adhesive
A pressure sensitive adhesive formulated primarily with silicone rubber and silicone resin.
4.4
epoxy pressure sensitive adhesive
A pressure sensitive adhesive formulated primarily with epoxy resin.
4.5
polyurethane (PU) pressure sensitive adhesive
A pressure sensitive adhesive formulated primarily with polyurethane resin.
4.6
solvent based pressure sensitive adhesive
A pressure sensitive adhesive dissolved or dispersed in an organic solvent.
NOTE: The adhesive exhibits pressure-sensitive properties after the solvent dries or evaporates.
4.7
water-based pressure sensitive adhesive
A pressure sensitive adhesive dissolved or dispersed in water. Also known as water-borne pressure sensitive adhesive.
