1 Scope
This standard specifies the principle, terms, definitions and symbols, specimen, apparatus, procedures, result treatment and report for fracture toughness testing method under slowly and continuously increasing tensile load.
This standard is applicable to rectangular cross-section tension specimen made of metallic material, for which semielliptical or partial circular surface crack is available.
2 Normative References
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments (excluding corrections), or revisions, of any of these publications do not apply to this standard. However parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies.

3 Principle
This test is used for evaluating the bearing capacity of plates or plate-like structural parts with surface cracks during service. Where the service conditions are the same as experiment conditions, the result of surface crack tension testing may be directly used in design.
