Determination of formaldehyde in amino resins and phenolic resins and of migration of formaldehyde in their moldings―High performance liquid chromatography
Determination of formaldehyde in amino resins and phenolic resins and of migration of formaldehyde in their moldings - High performance liquid chromatography
1 Scope
This standard specifies the high performance liquid chromatography for determination of the formaldehyde in amino resins and phenolic resins used for packaging and of migration of formaldehyde in their moldings.
This standard is applicable to the determination of formaldehyde in amino resins and phenolic resins used for packaging and of migration of formaldehyde in their moldings. This standard may also serve as reference for the determination of migration of formaldehyde in paint films.

3 Principle
The formaldehyde extract obtained by distillation or soaking of samples is subjected to derivatization reaction with 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) to produce 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone. The content of formaldehyde is determined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The formula of reaction between formaldehyde and 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine is as follows:
Reference spectrograms of 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine and 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone are shown in Annex A.
4 Reagents and materials
Unless otherwise specified, all reagents used shall be analytically-pure reagents and water used shall be Class-I water defined in GB/T 6682.
4.1 Isopropanol.
4.2 Acetonitrile: chromatographically pure.
