National food safety standard
Bamboo and wood used in food contact materials and articles
1 Scope
This standard is applicable to bamboo and wood used in food contact materials and articles.
2 Terms and definitions
2.1 Bamboo and wood used in food contact materials and articles
Various materials and articles made of bamboo, wood or cork, including cork plugs and plant fiber board products, which have been or are intended to be in contact with food or food additives (hereinafter referred to as food) or whose components may be transferred to food under normal conditions of use.
3 Basic requirements
Bamboo and wood used in food contact materials and articles shall meet the requirements of GB 4806.1.
4 Technical requirements
4.1 Requirements for raw materials
4.1.1 The Bamboo and wood used in food contact materials and articles shall not use raw materials which could endanger human health.
4.1.2 The use of oil, wax and other additives in food contact bamboo and wood materials and articles shall meet the requirements of GB 9685 and relevant announcements.
4.2 Requirements for sense
The sensory requirements shall meet those specified in Table 1.
Table 1 Requirements for sense
Item Requirements
Sense Normal color, no burr, moth a, odorless, mildew or other dirt
Soak solution No deterioration of sensory properties such as precipitation, odorless and abnormal coloring in the soak solution obtained in the migration test
a Not applicable to cork materials and articles.
4.3 Physical and chemical indexes
4.3.1 General physical and chemical indexes
The general physical and chemical indexes shall meet those specified in Tables 2 and 3.
Table 2 Migration substance indexes
Item Index Test method
Total migration quantity a/(mg/dm2)b ≤ 10 GB 31604.8
Formaldehyde/(mg/kg) ≤ 15 GB 31604.48
Sulfur dioxide/(mg/kg) ≤ 10 Annex A c
Pentachlorophenol and its salts (calculated as pentachlorophenol)/(μg/kg) ≤ 0.15 Food simulations and migration test conditions shall be selected according to GB 31604.1 and GB 5009.156, and the determination shall be carried out according to SN/T 2204d
a It is only applicable to food contact bamboo and wood materials and articles using coatings, adhesives and/or inks. For food contact bamboo and wood materials and articles using adhesives and/or inks, if the total migration quantity measured according to the selected food simulations in the relevant provisions exceeds the limit, the chloroform extracts shall be measured according to the GB 31604.8 and its measured results shall be determined according to the measured quantity of the chloroform extracts.
b For special food contact bamboo and wood materials and articles for infants and young children, the result unit shall be converted into mg/kg according to the area volume ratio in actual use, and the limit shall be ≤ 60 mg/kg.
c Only water is used as food simulation.
d Add 0.5mL of sulfuric acid solution (1 + 1) [except when 4% (volume fraction) acetic acid is selected as the food simulation] to the soaking solutions obtained by migration test, mix it evenly, and then measure it according to SN/T 2204.
Table 3 Residue indexes
Item Index Test method
Thiabendazole/(mg/kg) ≤ 1.2 Annex B
O-phenylphenol/(mg/kg) ≤ 4.8
Imazalil/(mg/kg) ≤ 0.4
Biphenyl/(mg/kg) ≤ 0.6
4.3.2 Additional physical and chemical indexes
The food contact bamboo and wood materials and articles shall meet the requirements of GB 9685 and relevant announcements on physical and chemical indexes such as specific migration limit (SML), specific total migration limit [SML (T)] and maximum residue limit (QM) of oil, wax and other additives.
4.4 Limit of microorganism
The microorganism containing in the bamboo and wood materials and articles which are expected to directly contact with the foods and which are directly used without the disinfection or cleaning shall meet the requirements of GB 14934, except for those in direct contact with food that needs to be peeled, shelled or cleaned before eating, cooking or processing.
4.5 Other technical requirements
The food contact bamboo and wood materials and articles using coatings, inks and/or adhesives shall also meet the corresponding national food safety standards.
