3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
passenger boarding bridge
closed tunnel for passengers and staff to get on and off the aircraft by realizing a flexible connection between the aircraft and the airport terminal building (or fixed tunnel)
3.2
wheel type passenger boarding bridge
boarding bridge which can move horizontally on the apron via a horizontal drive unit
3.3
apron drive type passenger boarding bridge
wheel type passenger boarding bridge which can realize horizontal rotation and telescoping movements on the apron via a horizontal drive unit
3.4
fixed radial type passenger boarding bridge
wheel type passenger boarding bridge which can only realize horizontal rotation movement on the apron via a horizontal drive unit
3.5
pedestal passenger boarding bridge
boarding bridge that realizes horizontal telescoping (or translation) movement of the boarding bridge via a telescoping (or translation) unit
3.6
special type passenger boarding bridge
boarding bridge with only some main motor functions of wheel type passenger boarding bridge
3.7
fixed tunnel
fixed closed tunnel connecting the airport terminal building and the telescoping tunnel of the boarding bridge
3.8
rotunda
connection between a boarding bridge and a terminal building (or fixed tunnel), whose bottom is fixed on the columns connected with the apron foundation, and which is the center for horizontal rotation movement of and the hinge support center for lifting movement of the boarding bridge
Note: Pedestal passenger boarding bridge only moves up and down.
3.9
telescoping tunnel
main body of the tunnel between the terminal building (or fixed tunnel) and the aircraft, which can be lifted, horizontally rotated and telescoped by the driving device
Note: The fixed radial type passenger boarding bridge only rotates horizontally, while the pedestal passenger boarding bridge only lifts up and down, telescopes or moves horizontally.
3.10
vertical drive unit
driving unit for vertical movement of a boarding bridge
3.11
horizontal drive unit
driving unit for horizontal rotation and telescoping movement of a boarding bridge
Note: Fixed radial type passenger boarding bridge only rotates.
3.12
telescoping (or translation) unit
driving unit for telescoping (or translation) movement of a pedestal passenger boarding bridge
3.13
cab
connection between the front end of a passenger boarding bridge and the aircraft door
Note: A console is usually installed at the cab.
3.14
fix cab
transition platform connecting the cab and the telescoping tunnel, which is the rotary movement center of the cab
Note: Where necessary, the fix cab may be equipped with service door(s) and service stair(s) for staff or emergency evacuation. Luggage chutes and climbing stairs used by staff for maintenance may also be installed.
3.15
service stair
stair-step tunnel between a boarding bridge and the apron, which can usually move synchronously with the boarding bridge
3.16
canopy
telescoping weatherproof device between the cab and the aircraft door
3.17
inter-ramp
short ramp that smoothly transitions the ground steps between tunnels
3.18
safety shoe
pressure-sensitive switch placed under the open aircraft door in the fixing state for detecting the rapid downward movement of the aircraft
3.19
emergency lowering
action to trigger safety shoe or equivalent detection devices to make the boarding bridge automatically lower in order to protect the aircraft door when the aircraft fuselage suddenly lowers with an amplitude beyond the adjustment capability of the auto-levelling device
3.20
hold-to-run control
manual control device. If it is pressed, the boarding bridge will move; if it is released, the boarding bridge will stop moving
3.21
auto-levelling
action to automatic adjust the relative height between the cab floor and the aircraft threshold in the fixing state
3.22
height of passenger boarding bridge
vertical distance from the midpoint of the front edge of the cab floor to the apron ground
3.23
length of passenger boarding bridge
distance between the center of the columns of the rotunda and the front end of the cab floor when the symmetrical center line of the cab coincides with that of the boarding bridge and the boarding bridge is in a horizontal state
Note: The length of the boarding bridge structure type shown in Figure 4 is not applicable to this definition.
