Measurement of copper and other elements in brake friction materials
1 Scope
This standard specifies the preparation and analysis methods of samples for the measurement of copper and other elements in brake friction materials.
This standard is applicable to unused brake friction materials.

3 Specimen preparation
3.1 Sampling
3.1.1 Wipe the whole friction assembly with lint-free paper (such as thin and soft absorbent paper), and wipe it repeatedly if necessary, to ensure that there is no dust or foreign matters on the assembly. In addition, rinse the assembly with deionized water, and then blot the water with lint-free paper.
3.1.2 Measure the thickness of friction material. If there is no steel back or shoe, just measure the thickness of the friction material. For friction assembly, the thickness of friction material may be measured directly as shown in Figure 1, or it may be obtained by subtracting the thickness of steel back or shoe from the thickness of friction assembly measured.
