1 Scope
This document describes an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for the determination of boric acid and salts of boric acid in toy materials.
This document is applicable to the determination of boron in toy materials, and the results are counted by boric acid and salts of boric acid.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purpose of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
base material
material upon which coatings may be formed or deposited
3.2
coating
all layers of material formed or deposited on the base material of a toy
Note: It includes paints, varnishes, lacquers, inks, polymers, or other substances of a similar nature, whether they contain metallic particles or not, no matter how they have been applied to the toy, and which may be removed by scraping with a sharp blade
3.3
mass-coloured materials
materials that absorb coloring substances but do not form a coating
Note: Such as wood, fiberboard, cardboard, leather, bones and other loose materials.
3.4
paper and paperboard
paper and paperboard with maximum mass per unit area not greater than 400 g/m2
Note: Paper and paperboard (possibly, fiberboard or cardboard) with the mass per unit area exceeding 400 g/m2 shall be treated as "other mass-coloured materials".
3.5
scraping
mechanical process for removal of coatings down to the base material
Note: Scraping shall not be performed on the base material.
3.6
toy material
all accessible materials on toys
4 Principle
Boric acid and salts of boric acid in toy materials are extracted with hydrochloric acid of specific concentration under specific conditions. After filtration, boron in the sample solution is determined with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) and quantified with internal standard method. The content of boric acid and salts of boric acid is calculated based on boron content.
