3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
decisive voltage classification; DVC
highest continuous voltage class that can be generated between any live parts under the most severe operating conditions
3.2
protective extra-low voltage (PELV) system
electrical system in which the r.m.s of an a.c. voltage does not exceed 50V or the d.c. voltage does not exceed 120V under normal operation or single fault conditions (excluding ground faults in other circuits), also called PELV system
3.3
safety extra-low voltage (SELV) system
electrical system in which the r.m.s of an a.c. voltage does not exceed 50V or the d.c. voltage does not exceed 120V under normal operation or single fault conditions (including ground faults in other circuits), also called SELV system
3.4
protective bonding
electrical connection that maintains electrical continuity between accessible conductive components or protective shielding and protective conductor terminals
3.5
protective separation
structure or measure that separates circuits of different protection levels from each other through basic insulation and supplementary insulation or other equivalent protective measures (such as strengthening insulation or protecting impedance)
3.6
functional insulation; FI
insulation measures to ensure the normal operation of equipment, which cannot protect against the danger of electric shock, but can reduce the possibility of ignition or fire
3.7
basic insulation
insulation that can only provide basic protection against electric shock under normal working conditions
3.8
supplementary insulation
independent insulation added in addition to the basic insulation, which can provide electric shock protection in the event of basic insulation failure
