1 Scope
This document specifies the special requirements for mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306-2 with regard to access and safety guards.
ISO 11660-1 specifies the general requirements for access to consoles and other areas during normal operation, maintenance, inspection, installation and dismantling of cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1, and for the protection of persons on or near cranes from moving parts, falling objects. General requirements for safety guards for rotating parts.

3 Terminology and definitions
The terms and definitions defined in ISO 11660-1 apply to this document.
4 Access
4.1 Access rules
All consoles shall be accessible from the floor or via walkways, stairs, ladders and/or pedestals. Other parts of the crane that require frequent access (i.e. weekly) for operation or maintenance shall be equipped with access devices. The crawler of a mobile crane may be used as an access tread if supported by three points.
4.2 Requirements
4.2.1 General design requirements for access
The following requirements shall be met when determining the size of the access aisle:
a) The machine is on level ground;
b) the machine is parked according to the manufacturer's instructions.
4.2.2 Requirements in accordance with ISO 11660-1
The design requirements of the aisles shall comply with the requirements of ISO 11660-1;2008 and be refined in accordance with the corresponding provisions of this document, as shown in Table 1.
4.2.2.1 Stairs
The minimum tread width shall be 0.4 m for category 1 access in accordance with ISO 11660-1.
4.2.2.2 Steps
For category 1 access in accordance with 1SO 11660-1, the minimum tread width shall be 0.32 m in line with category 2.
4.2.2.3 Straight ladders
The maximum tread spacing shall be 0.4 m.
The width of the single treads may be reduced to a minimum of 0.16 m.
4.2.2.4 Walkways, ramps, platforms
Walkways, ramps, resting platforms and platforms over 2 m in height should be equipped with handles or handrails.
For boom walkways and other similar areas used for inspection or maintenance only, the porosity of the standing or walking surface may be increased to twice the value specified in ISO 11660-1;2008, 5.5.
4.2.2.5 Handles, handrails, intermediate crossbars and side protection
The distance from the base/stairs surface to the handrail/railing should be a minimum of 0.9 m and a maximum of l.l m.
Due to the nature of mobile cranes, the distance between the chassis and the slewing platform is limited and in this area the minimum distance from the handle to the wall surface may be 0.04 m.
Wheeled cranes may not be equipped with side protection for the chassis walkway.
The vertical distance from the higher part of the handrail or handle to the base of the platform/resting platform mounted at the top of the ladder/stairs should be 0.9 m and a maximum of 1.l m. This dimension may be reduced if the objective conditions of the mobile crane do not allow for the specified dimensions.
