Leather and fur - Chemical determination of metal content -
Part 1: Extractable metals
WARNING: The concentrated acids used in this document are very corrosive and/or oxidizing liquids, which could raise the possibility of fire or explosion in the event of contact with ignitable materials. They might cause acute or chronic health dangers as well. Moreover, they are hazardous to water. Suitable safety measures are therefore necessary during the test with them.
1 Scope
This document specifies a method for the determination of the respective content of 22 extractable metals in leather and fur, including: aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), barium (Ba), calcium (Ca), cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), lead (Pb), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg), antimony (Sb), selenium (Se), tin (Sn), titanium (Ti), zinc (Zn) and zirconium (Zr)
This document is applicable for determining the respective content of 22 extractable metals in various types of leather and fur, and is also suitable for determining the content of extractable chromium in chromium-tanned leather.

4 Principle
The leather samples are extracted by acid artificial-perspiration solution and the resultant extracts are filtered and acidified. Then the respective content of metals in the extracts are determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS) or atomic fluorescence spectrometer (AFS), and the respective content of extractable metals in the samples are thus calculated.
Note: This method determines the respective content of extractable metals, not the content of a specific metal compound or metal oxide.
