This standard specifies the method of measuring the liquid level of petroleum and liquid petroleum products in tanks and the height of free water at the bottom of containers with a master dip-tape.
This standard is applicable to petroleum and liquid petroleum products.

3 Terms
3.1 Gauging: process of measuring the liquid level of oil (hereinafter referred to as oil level) in the tank with a master dip-tape.
3.2 Dipping hole (dip hatch): opening at the top of the container for gauging, temperature measurement and sampling.
3.3 Reference point: fixed point or mark on the dipping hole, that is, the measurement starts from this point.
3.4 Gauging plate (datum plate): horizontal metal plate welded on the bottom (or wall) of the container, located directly below the reference point, as the contact surface of the dip weight.
3.5 Dipping reference point (datum point): contact point of dip weight at the bottom of container or on the gauging plate at the time of gauging.
3.6 Reference height: distance from the reference point to the dipping reference point.
3.7 Oil level: distance from the oil level to the dipping reference point.
3.8 Water dip: distance from the oil-water interface to the dipping reference point.
3.9 Ullage: distance from the reference point to the oil level in the tank.
