This document replaces GB/T 12541-1990 Motor vehicles - Passing topography capacity - Test method. In addition to structural adjustments and editorial changes, the following main technical changes have been made with respect to GB/T 12541-1990:
a) the scope of application is modified from off-road vehicles to Categories M, N and G motor vehicles (see Clause 1 hereof; Clause 1 of Edition 1990);
b) the "Terms and definitions" is modified (see Clause 3 hereof; Clause 3 of Edition 1990);
c) the test conditions are modified (see 4.1 hereof; 4.1 of Edition 1990);
d) the requirements for test instruments and equipment are deleted (see 4.2 of Edition 1990);
e) the requirements for measurement accuracy are added (see 4.2);
f) the clause of test items is added (see 4.3);
g) the measurement method for passing capability parameter is added (see 5.1);
h) the terrain passing capability test method is modified (see 5.2.2 and 5.2.3 hereof; 6.1 to 6.9 of Edition 1990);
i) the test methods on "twisted roads", "side slopes" and "ramps" are added (see 5.2.3, 5.2.5 and 5.2.6);
j) the soft ground passing capability test method is added (see 5.3);
k) the table for characteristics of terrain passing capability facility is modified (see Annex C hereof; Annex A of Edition 1990);
l) the basic principles for soft ground selection in soft ground passing capability test are added (see Annex D).

Motor vehicles passing capacity test method
1 Scope
This document specifies the test conditions and test methods for motor vehicle passing capability parameter, terrain passing capability and soft ground passing capability.
This document is applicable to Categories M, N and G motor vehicles, and may serve as a reference for other vehicles.
2 Normative references
The following documents contain requirements which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition (including any amendments) applies.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 3730.3, GB/T 12673 and GB/T 15089 as well as the following apply.
3.1
passing capability parameter
objective parameter index of vehicle passing capability
Example: Approach angle, departure angle, ground clearance, ramp angle and lateral passing radius.
3.2
terrain passing capability
capability of a vehicle to pass through certain terrains (e.g., vertical obstacles, ridges, horizontal trenches, road ditches, craters, twisted roads, wading pools, side slopes, ramps, etc.)
3.3
soft ground passing capability
capability of a vehicle to pass through certain soft ground (e.g., sands, ploughed lands, muddy lands, swamps, paddy lands, snowfields, etc.)
3.4
lateral passing radius
maximum arc radius formed by the projection of the inner ground contact point of the left and right wheels of the same axle and a low point of the chassis in zero X-plane under the static conditions of vehicle
4 Test conditions
4.1 General
4.1.1 Vehicle preparation and meteorological conditions for test shall meet the requirements of GB/T 12534.
4.1.2 The wear amount of tread pattern of the vehicle under test shall not exceed 1/5 of the original pattern height.
4.1.3 If different tyre models are available for the same vehicle type, the vehicle equipped with tyres with the minimum diameter shall be selected for test.
4.1.4 The tyre pressure of the vehicle under test shall be adjusted to the design pressure; if the tyre with adjustable pressure is installed, it shall be adjusted to the appropriate pressure according to the manufacturer's design requirements.
4.1.5 If adjustable suspension is installed, the suspension of the vehicle under test shall be adjusted to the state required by the manufacturer.
4.1.6 The vehicle under test shall be loaded according to the maximum design total mass, axle load and wheel load specified by the manufacturer.
4.2 Measurement parameters and accuracy
See Table 1 for measurement parameters and accuracy.
