3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
lightning protection system; LPS
A system consisting of air-termination systems, down-conductor systems, earth-termination systems, surge protective devices and their connecting conductors, etc., used to protect buildings, sites, and installations of hazardous chemical enterprises from lightning hazards.
[SOURCE: GB 50057-2010, 2.0.5, modified]
3.2
lightning warning system
A system that monitors thunderstorm activity in a target area and can provide warnings of potential lightning occurrence in that area for a future period.
[SOURCE: GB 17681-2024, 3.3]
3.3
air-termination system
Consists of lightning rods, lightning tapes, lightning conductors, and lightning meshes, as well as metal roofs and metal components, etc., for intercepting lightning flashes.
[SOURCE: GB 50057-2010, 2.0.8]
3.4
down-conductor system
Conductor used to conduct lightning current from the air-termination system to the earth-termination system.
[SOURCE: GB 50057-2010, 2.0.9]
3.5
earth-termination system
The combination of earth electrodes and earth conductors, used to conduct lightning current and disperse it into the ground.
[SOURCE: GB 50057-2010, 2.0.10]
3.6
direct lightning flash
A lightning flash that strikes directly on a building/structure, other object, the ground, or an external lightning protection system, producing electrical, thermal, and mechanical effects.
[SOURCE: GB 50057-2010, 2.0.13]
3.7
earth electrode
Conductor embedded in soil or concrete foundation for dissipating current.
[SOURCE: GB 50057-2010, 2.0.11]
3.8
ground resistance
The real part of the impedance between a given point of a system, installation, or equipment and a reference earth at a given frequency.
[SOURCE: GB 50650-2011, 2.0.21]
3.9
impulse earthing resistance
Earth resistance determined based on the impulse current flowing into the ground through an earth electrode.
Note: The ratio of the peak voltage to earth on the earth electrode to the peak current.
[SOURCE: GB 50650-2011, 2.0.23, modified]
3.10
more thunderstorm region
A region where the average annual number of thunderstorm days exceeds 40 d but does not exceed 90 d, or where the ground flash density exceeds 2.78 times/(km²·a) but does not exceed 7.98 times/(km²·a).
[SOURCE: GB 50064-2014, 2.0.8, modified]
3.11
strong thunderstorm region
A region where the average annual number of thunderstorm days exceeds 90 d, or where the ground flash density exceeds 7.98 times/(km²·a), as well as regions with particularly severe lightning hazards based on operational experience.
[SOURCE: GB 50064-2014, 2.0.9, modified]
3.12
equipotential bonding
Electrically connecting various metal components, metal facilities, metal pipelines, metal equipment, etc., using conductors to make the potentials of the objects approximately equal.
